Not illustrated. 1902 Excerpt: ... the Lower Culmmeasures above and below limestones, and citing Canonteign, also in them. The dark shales at the base of the Lower Culm-measures seem to be persistent along the northern outcrop, unless cut out by faults. On the southern outcrop, they are apparently well represented in the districts west of Ashton and Trusham, but beyond these their extension has not been ascertained, and it is not impossible that they may thin out. Where they occur it is often so difficult to ascertain their junction with the Upper Devonian, that the writer believes he was mistaken in including dark shales, with strings and lenticles of crinoidal limestone, in the railway-cutting west of Morebath, in the Lower Culm-measures and certainly in considering that the limestone-horizons of the Culm-measures passed northward into the basement dark shales. Quarterli/ Journal of the Geological Society, 1895, vol. H., page 619. t Ibid., page 623. V.--Structure. So far as the writer can judge, where unfaulted along their northern and southern margins, the Lower Culm rocks invariably rest on Upper Devonian. The Devonian rocks which emerge from beneath them on the north, and those which underlie them on the south differ in character. The former are largely associated with grits, indicative of deposition in comparatively shallow water, contain no contemporaneous volcanic rocks, and but little limestone. In the latter, volcanic rocks are of common occurence, there aie large local masses of limestone, and arenaceous rocks are restricted to the lower beds (the Lower Devonian). Through the observations of De la Beche, Phillips, Holl, and others, it has long been known that the Culm-measures occupy a trough or synclinal basin, the edges of which are formed of corresponding strata which overlie ...
